Derek Jeter remembers going to McDonald's after his first game in 1995

It has at times been a reach finding significance for every road city in which Derek Jeter has been honored this season.

Chicago, for instance. It's difficult to recall a defining Jeter moment from his time going to U.S. Cellular Field to face the White Sox.

That is not the case in Seattle. "This is where it all began," Jeter said before Tuesday night's game against the Mariners at Safeco Field.

Jeter's debut, May 29, 1995, didn't take place at Safeco Field but at the cavernous Kingdome. The shortstop didn't hesitate in recalling his primary memory of that night, an 8-7 loss. "I was 0-for-5," Jeter said with a smile.

The Mariners' Rafael Carmona allowed seven runs and 10 hits in the game, none of them to Jeter. His first career hit came a night later, a fifth-inning single to left off Seattle starter Tim Belcher, in a 7-3 loss, a night he finished 2-for-3.

"You're extremely nervous when you come up," Jeter said. "It's sort of a weight off your shoulders once you get that first one [career hit] because I think a lot of times the first of anything is the most difficult to get."

Jeter, honored before the game by the Mariners, had another memory from that May 28 night from long ago.

"My dad was in town and afterward we tried to get something to eat and everything was closed so we ended up walking to a McDonald's," Jeter said, before smiling again. "So he's here again today, both my parents are, so we'll go to McDonald's after the game."

Kelley's back

Shawn Kelley, on the DL since May 7 with a strained lumbar spine, traveled to Seattle and is likely to be activated before Wednesday night's game.

"We're expecting him tomorrow," Joe Girardi said.
