Derek Jeter continues to prepare for the 2014 season and says he isn't thinking about anything beyond that.
The 39-year-old shortstop wrapped up his third week of individual workouts Friday with an abbreviated session of throwing and hitting in the cage after overnight showers left the fields at the Yankees' facility unplayable.
When asked after the workout if this season will be his last, Jeter was noncommittal. "I'm focused on, when do we start over there [pointing to Legends Field]? . . . I'm focused on that day," Jeter said. "That's the only thing I'm thinking about right now."
Jeter said he will continue to work out at the team's facility next week with routines that are similar to the past three weeks but with more movement. Pitchers and catchers report to spring training Friday; Jeter and the other position players are scheduled to arrive five days later on Feb. 19.
"I feel good," he said. "I've been working hard. I've had a complete offseason of workout and strength and everything, so I feel good right now."
Jeter has looked comfortable running, throwing and fielding during his daily hourlong sessions, showing no apparent lingering issues resulting from a left ankle fracture and other injuries that forced him to miss almost all of last season.
"It's been fun, but it's been difficult because you're starting over from scratch," he said. "You're basically going for pretty much a whole year where you can't really work out and you can't really strengthen anything. You're starting over. So it's a long process, but it's been enjoyable to get back to this point, or I should say it's enjoyable now, not necessarily going through it, but now at this point it's enjoyable."
