TAMPA, Fla. — Rookie righthander Will Warren was informed by manager Aaron Boone on Sunday that he has made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster.
“I came into camp with that as the goal,” Warren said. “To hear it from Boonie’s mouth was super-exciting.”
Boone said Warren will start the fourth game of the season. Carlos Carrasco will be slotted in when the Yankees need a fifth starter, which might not come until the sixth or seventh game.
Warren, who will start the Yankees’ final exhibition game on Tuesday in Miami, has a 4.19 ERA in spring training. His debut with the Yankees in 2024 was rocky, as he had a 10.32 ERA in six appearances (five starts).
Other bubble players did not get the same clarity. With two spring training games left, the Yankees still have decisions to reveal about the bullpen and bench.
Boone said the club knows whom it wants to take to the Bronx for Thursday’s opener against Milwaukee. The Yankees will keep their final decisions open until they have to announce them to the players and public.
“In theory, we have [decided],” Boone said. “But we haven’t told a few people just because we don’t want to quite go there just yet.”
One of the players squarely on the bubble is infielder Oswald Peraza, who is out of options and can’t be sent to the minors without passing through waivers.
“At the end of the day, I am expecting some kind of news at some point,” Peraza, who is batting .174, said through an interpreter. “But at the same time, it’s not a decision that I make.”
Notes & quotes: Max Fried was charged with three runs in 5 1/3 innings in the Yankees’ 3-3 tie with the Rays in their final home game of spring training . . . Austin Wells, who is hitting .372 with a 1.263 OPS in 43 at-bats in spring training, hit his sixth home run and Anthony Volpe hit his fourth.
