Yankees place Marcus Stroman on injured list with knee inflammation after poor outing

Aaron Boone acknowledged the obvious. Marcus Stroman hasn’t been particularly sharp this season. But Boone’s hope is that a 15-day stint on the injured list with left knee inflammation will allow the righthander to right himself.
“Hopefully we can attack this and be something that we can benefit from and get him physically where he needs to be and then translate that onto the mound,” Boone said after the Yankees’ 8-4 win over the Giants on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
Righthander Allan Winans was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes in the corresponding roster move.
The decision to place Stroman on the injured list came not even 24 hours after he was strafed for five runs and four hits in two-thirds of an inning in the Yankees’ rain-shortened 9-1 loss to the Giants on Friday night.
Stroman is 0-1 with an 11.57 ERA and 2.04 WHIP in three starts this season. He has allowed 12 runs (all earned), 12 hits and seven walks in 9 1⁄3 innings.
After the game, Boone said Stroman mentioned his left knee was bothering him.
Stroman threw 46 pitches in the first inning Friday night and did not record an out until the seventh batter, Wilmer Flores, struck out on a foul tip with the Yankees in a 5-0 hole.
Stroman induced Patrick Bailey to fly out to Cody Bellinger before surrendering a single by Tyler Fitzgerald, which prompted Boone to replace him with Ryan Yarbrough. Yarbrough retired Mike Yastrzemski to end the inning.
When he was asked if the less-than-ideal weather conditions Friday night affected Stroman, Boone said: “I don’t know. It’s tough to say. We haven’t been in ideal conditions most of the start of the season here, and that affects everyone [differently], but Stro has also been doing this a long time and pitched in these situations a lot before.”
Clarke Schmidt was at the Stadium on Saturday and appears to be on a trajectory to make his 2025 season debut relatively soon.
“Everything went good and feeling good, so I’m happy where everything’s at,” said Schmidt, who was limited to one spring training start because of right shoulder fatigue. He made two rehab starts for Double-A Somerset, recording 11 strikeouts and allowing four hits in 7 1⁄3 innings.
“[I focused] on my process and trying to take care of what I can do as far as getting the pitch count up and getting to my areas,” Schmidt said. “Working on different pitch selections, what plays in certain areas. Just like spring training, treating it like that.”
