Yankees' Jose Trevino sidelined with calf strain, should be ready by end of camp

TAMPA, Fla. – Jose Trevino’s comeback from the season-ending right wrist surgery he underwent last July has hit a roadblock.
But, the Yankees believe, just a minor one and not the kind that will prohibit the veteran catcher from breaking camp with the team at the end of March.
During his first news conference of the spring on Wednesday, Aaron Boone said Trevino, a popular receiver among the pitching staff, recently suffered a calf strain that will sideline him for a bit.
“He probably won’t be available the first couple of weeks of games,” Boone said of the Yankees' Grapefruit League schedule, which starts Feb. 24 in Lakeland against the Tigers. “But he’s doing well.”
The seventh-year manager said Trevino, a particular favorite of ace Gerrit Cole, is expected to ready for Opening Day but, as Boone’s predecessor Joe Girardi often said, “calves can be tricky.” Meaning, unpredictable.
That could further open the door for rookie Austin Wells, who impressed after his Sept. 1 call-up last season, to grab the starting job. The lefty-hitting Wells is among a large group of Yankees who have been working out at the club’s minor league complex for over a month.
“Excited about his progress,” Boone said of Wells. “I think the progress he’s made as a catcher defensively has been more than I expected … We’ll see how it plays out. He’s certainly put himself in a good position to earn some things.”
Yanks deal for reliever
The Yankees added yet another lefty reliever Wednesday, acquiring Clayton Andrews, 27, from the Brewers in exchange for 19-year-old minor league righthander Joshua Quezada.
Andrews appeared in four games over four stints for the Brewers last season, his first in the big leagues, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings. He is likely to start the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He posted a 2.53 ERA in 48 games with Triple-A Nashville in 2023.
Effross out until "the summer"
Boone disclosed that righty Scott Effross, who missed all of 2023 recovering from Tommy John surgery, would be out until “the summer” after having back surgery in December.
As part of any overall busy day of news regarding the bullpen, late Wednesday afternoon the Yankees reached an agreement with righthander Lou Trivino on a one-year, $1.5 million contract with a club option for 2025. Trivino, who posted a 1.66 ERA with the Yankees after they got him from Oakland at the 2022 trade deadline as part of the deal for Frankie Montas, underwent Tommy John surgery last May and is unlikely to be ready until mid-summer at the earliest.
