Jason Kidd appears in LI court on DWI charge

New York Knick Jason Kidd, who pleaded not guilty in July to a drunken-driving charge stemming from an arrest in which he crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a utility pole near his home in Water Mill, appeared Wednesday in Southampton Town Justice Court.
Kidd, who seemed relaxed, smiled as he walked into the Hampton Bays courthouse about 9 a.m.
"Good morning," Kidd said to the members of the media who followed him in. "I hope everyone is having a nice day."
Dressed in a blue pinstripe suit, the 6-foot-4 point guard stood quietly in the courtroom as his attorney, Edward Burke Jr. of Sag Harbor, discussed the case with Justice Andrea Schiavoni.
The case was adjourned to Nov. 7, and Kidd does not have to appear, according to Schiavoni.
Kidd smelled "heavily of an alcoholic beverage," was "very unsteady on his feet" and had "bloodshot and watery eyes" and "slurred speech" when he was arrested July 15 on the DWI charge, according to Southampton Town police records. Kidd was found at 1:56 a.m. in his car about 25 feet into a wooded area on the corner of Cobb Road and Little Cobb Road in Water Mill by police.
Kidd was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusing to take a breath test and going through a stop sign, police said. He was released on his own recognizance.
"Jason is taking this very, very seriously," Burke said outside the courthouse, adding that Kidd is "ready for his season."
The Dolan family owns controlling interests in the Knicks, Madison Square Garden and Cablevision. Cablevision owns Newsday.
