Knicks fans are excited about the team’s 2-0 series lead over the Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals, but there is a price to pay for that – literally.
Tickets to Games 3, 4 and 6 at Madison Square Garden on the resale market have reached unprecedented levels.
As of Thursday afternoon, TickPick said Game 3 on Saturday afternoon was the most expensive Knicks home game on record, with an average sale price of $983.
To be clear, that is not an average asking price. Rather it is the average price for tickets actually purchased, a shocking number for a second-round game.
That average naturally is skewed by very high-cost tickets, such as the two in Section 11D, Row 5 that went for $6,698 apiece.
But even the “cheap” seats are not cheap. The “get-in” asking price for Game 3 on TickPick as of Thursday afternoon, meaning the least expensive ticket available, was $860.
That was 347% more expensive than the get-in price for Game 2 in Boston, which was $192.
The get-in price for Game 4 in New York was $808 and for Game 6, if necessary, it was $723.
Meanwhile, in Boston, prices remained more reasonable, with a low of $302 for Game 5 and $630 for a potential Game 7.
Price trends were similar on StubHub, where on Thursday the lowest price for a ticket to Game 3, including fees, was $841. But a relative bargain was showing for Game 4 at $662.
For many events, prices drop as game time nears, so for those with flexible plans it is worth checking the market as tipoff nears.
But there are no guarantees, and given the Knicks’ two shocking, come-from-20-points-behind upset victories, interest figures to remain high for the foreseeable future.
For those with very flexible plans, heading to a new city might be a good option. Late Thursday afternoon, tickets to Game 2 of Golden State at Minnesota that night could be had for under $100.
