LIer Sue Wicks named to Women's Basketball Hall of Fame

Sue Wicks, a native of Center Moriches, will be inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2013. Wicks, a forward-center, was a three-time All-American at Rutgers from 1986-88 and the first-ever draft pick of the WNBA's New York Liberty.

During her time at Rutgers, Wicks set school records among men's and women's programs with 2,655 points, 21.2 points per game, 1,357 rebounds, 10.9 rebounds per game, 293 blocked shots, 1,091 field goals made and 473 free throws made. Wicks won both the Naismith Player of the Year Award and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association National Player of the Year Award during her senior season in 1988.

In 1987, Wicks won a gold medal as a member of Team USA at the Pan-American Games. After graduating from college, she played professionally overseas in Italy, Spain, Japan and Israel before the WNBA was formed. Wicks spent six seasons with the Liberty, averaging 4.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Wicks and the Liberty appeared in three WNBA Finals, but lost all three times. Wicks retired from the WNBA in 2003 with 155 blocked shots, the eighth most in league history.

The WBHOF Class of 2013 also includes coaches Gary Blair and Jim Foster, along with players Peggie Gillom-Granderson, Jen Rizzotti and Annette Smith-Knight. The group will be formally introduced at the 2012 State Farm Tip-Off Classic between Baylor and Kentucky on Nov. 13 in Waco, Texas, and inducted June 8, 2013, at the WBHOF in Knoxville, Tenn.
