Boxing at the Barclays Center

The first night of boxing at the Barclays Center is hopefully the last night of boxing for Erik Morales. The former champion was brutally knocked out by Danny Garcia in a WBC-WBA super lightweight match. A perfect left hook by Garcia sent Morales through the ropes in the fourth round. The Mexican's corner rushed the ring before the referee began to count, signifying the end of the bout, and most likely, Morales' career. Morales has come out of retirement before, now it's time to stay retired.

* The Barclays Center is a beautiful arena. While the inside is somewhat similar to the Prudential Center in Newark, the exterior is unique. They announced a crowd of just over 11,000. One of the questions circulating on fight night was just how many of that number was paid.

* Pablo Cano, who lost a split decision to Paulie Malignaggi, suffered one of the worst cuts I've seen in boxing. Incredible that he lasted 12 rounds.

* Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin dropped Hassan N'Dam six times en route to a unanimous decision to cop the WBO middleweight crown. Both fighters increased their fan base with this effort. Both fighters entered the ring with 27-0 records.

* The story of the night was Brooklyn's Danny Jacobs. He scored an electrifying first-round knockout, but overcoming cancer and returning to the ring was the greater accomplishment. "They told me I would never walk or box again," he said after the fight. "I proved everyone wrong. This moment means the world to me."

* Brooklyn's Dmitry Salita won a six-round fight on the undercard and is still calling for an inter-borough showdown against Malginaggi for Paulie's WBA title. Salita said that the Dodgers left town in 1957 but now "boxing will become a team sport in Brooklyn."

* Also on the undercard, former welterweight champ Luis Collazzo, also out of Brooklyn, won an eight-round decision over Steve Chambers.

* Let the record state that the first bout at the Barclays Center - Boyd Melson vs. Jason Thompson -- ended in a six-round draw.

* Long Island's Arthur Mercante Jr. refereed the Devon Alexander-Randall Bailey title fight (won by Alexander) on the card.

* Tough crowd. But a fair crowd. The Malignaggi-Cano and Alexander-Bailey fights were booed. But the  Quillin-N'Dam and Garcia-Morales fights had them on their feet. Can't argue with the responses.

* Morales failed a pre-fight drug test and Cano failed to make weight. Both are disappointing but didn't over shadow the excitement of the card.

* According to Mike Woods at ESPN New York, Golden Boy promotions plans on coming back to the Barclays Center early in 2013 with "something historic."
