Tomasz Adamek fights April 23 at Pru
The recent announcement that heavyweight Tomasz Adamek would finally get his heavyweight title shot against either Vitali or Wladimir Klitschko in September in Poland was accompanied by reports that he would take a tuneup in Poland in April. But it turns out Adamek's interim bout against Irish-born Kevin McBride will take place in a more familiar setting April 23 at the Prudential Center in Newark.
The fact that McBride (35-8-1, 29 KOs) is 6-6 will help Adamek (43-1, 28 KOs) prepare for the taller Klitschkos. Although McBride is known for his sixth-round stoppage of a faded Mike Tyson in 2005 (pictured), he has lost four of his past five bouts.
"There were a lot of things taken into consideration when choosing this fight," Main Events promoter Kathy Duva said in a statement. "Overall, though, Tomasz was just more comfortable staying at home for this fight. We'll now focus on McBride, and then focus all of our efforts into the big one in September. I think that his fans at Prudential Center will give Tomasz a great sendoff to Poland in this fight, and I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them in Poland in September."
