Chuck Priore on 2014 Seawolves recruits

          Stony Brook football coach Chuck Priore focused primarily on replenishing the offensive side of the football in his 2014 recruiting class announced on Wednesday. Of 19 recruits, a dozen play offense, six are on defense and a highly recruited punter was added on special teams.

          Here is a rundown on each recruit, including biographical information and some comments from Priore:

          STACEY BEDELL, RB, 5-10, 180, Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd/UMass – Co-Hansen Award winner from 2011 spent two seasons with FBS UMass before transferring. He totaled 301 yards rushing last season, including 81 yards and a TD at Kansas State and 70 yards against Wisconsin. Bedell should fit in three-back rotation with starter Marcus Coker, who was injured after two games, and leading rusher James Kenner.

          Priore: “Stacey is with us already and is working hard. We’re really excited about his ability. We would have loved to get him out of high school…Stacey brings a speed element to the tailback position.”

          JOE CARBONE, QB, 6-2, 220, Wethersfield, Ct./Xavier – First team All-Southern Connecticut Conference Division I…passed for 1,046 yards and 7 touchdowns, and ran for 1,050 yards and 17 TDs…part of a state championship as sophomore and junior…considered a pocket passer…likely redshirt freshman.

          Priore: “Joe is a big, strong, versatile athlete who started one year at quarterback in high school. We really love his arm strength.”

          JAKE CARLOCK, DB, 6-2, 205, Babylon, N.Y./Babylon – NYS Class C co-Player of the Year…first team All-Long Island…Rob Burnett Award (top defensive player) and Tom Cassese Award (top DB)…back-to-back Long Island Class IV Championships…19 career interceptions (9 as senior)…played WR and set Long Island Championship record with 10 receptions vs. Roosevelt…51 catches for 921 yards.

          Priore: “Jake is an all-purpose athlete who has the ability to play a number of different positions for us.”

          CAL DANIELS, TE, 6-2, 255, Bethel, Ct./Bethel – Walter Camp All-Connecticut team…caught 25 passes for 318 yards and 3 TDs as senior and 42 for 481 yards and 7 TDs as junior…Was All-State Class M on defense with 83 tackles and nine sacks…all-conference basketball player…Could play TE or H-back in Seawolves’ offense.

          Priore: “Cal is a skilled athlete. He’ll be able to set the edge for us blocking as well as being athletic enough to help us in the passing game.”

          BRYCE HUDAK, OL, 6-3, 285, Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom – Second team All-Area by the Lehigh Valley Express Times…plays baseball.

          Priore: “Bryce is exactly what we look for in a Stony Brook offensive lineman – a big, strong, athletic kid.”

          PATRICK IRWIN, QB, 6-3, 190, State College, Pa./State College – First team Mid-Penn Commonwealth…honorable mention All-Western Pa. Class 4A-3A…passed for 1,461 yards and 9 TDs and rushed for 902 yards and 13 TDs…as junior, accounted for more than 1,900 yards total offense and 22 TDs…Dual threat QB fits Seawolves’ offensive system…likely to redshirt as freshman.

          Priore: “Patrick is an athletic quarterback who throws the ball well on the run. He adds the ability to make plays with his legs.”

          RAYMOND JONES, DL, 6-3, 205, Roosevelt, N.Y./Roosevelt – first team All-Long Island and All-State…50 tackles and 20 sacks (led LI)…called “most dominant pass rusher on Long Island” by Newsday…had 68 tackles, including 12 for loss and 11 sacks as junior…won 1-A 110-meter hurdles.

          Priore: “Raymond is an athletic defensive end who has the ability to make an immediate impact as a pass rusher…He will run the fastest of all our defensive ends…He just needs to get stronger.”

          JOHN KINDER, QB, 6-2, 190, Inwood, N.Y./Syracuse – Following graduation, has one year eligibility left as a graduate student…Saw action in only four games at Syracuse…was 2009 NYS Class A Player of the year…had more than 5,000 yards total offense and accounted for 110 TDs in high school…first team All-Long Island…won Snyder Award as top QB in Nassau County…Favorite to win starting QB job.

          Priore: “John is an accomplished quarterback who will be able to translate what he learned at Syracuse to our team…John is going to compete for the job. He wants nothing handed to him. We’re excited about his talent level. He received excellent coaching at Syracuse.”

          SHANE LAWLESS, LB, 6-1, 190, Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown – All-Burlington County…had 86 tackles, including 13 for loss and 7.5 sacks…made two interceptions, blocked a punt and scored a touchdown…volleyball player.

          Priore: “Shayne is a tall, lean, athletic linebacker who can make plays from sideline to sideline.”

          TADARRIAN LUSTER, DB, 5-8, 165, Cedar Hill, Tx./Cedar Hill – District 7-5A first team at safety…team earned top-30 ranking in country and won state championship at Cowboys Stadium…had 81 tackles, 9 passes defensed and one interception as senior...started at nickel cornerback.

          Priore: “Tadarrian played for one of the top high school programs in Texas. It’s the best program we’ve ever recruited a kid from…He’s a physical corner back with the ability to cover. If he were 5-11, we probably wouldn’t get him.”

          NOAH MCGINTY, LB, 5-11, 215, Carlsbad, Ca./Carlsbad – First team All-Avocado West League…led league with 115 tackles, including 30 for a loss…team defensive MVP…100 tackles as junior…three-year starter.

          Priore: “Noah is a weight-trained linebacker who has been very well-coached. He has excellent fundamentals.”

          HARIS MRKULIC, OL, 6-4, 320, Flushing, N.Y./Flushing/Nassau CC – Rated No. 16 interior lineman by JC Gridiron…started at center and helped Nassau  lead Northeast Conference with 236 yards rushing per game…in high school selected to Boomer Esiason’s NYC vs. LI All-Star game…Could move to left guard for Seawolves.

          Priore: “Haris brings game experience from Nassau where he was a two-year starter.”

          MARC NOLAN, P, 6-1, 180, Woodstock, Ga./Blessed Trinity – honorable mention All-Georgia Class AAA…Kohl’s Professional Camps No. 14 punter…ESPN’s No. 36 punter…averaged 46 yards per punt…also has experience as placekicker, making 38 of 39 PATs and 11 of 15 FGs, including school record-tying 52-yarder.

          Priore: “Marc has field-changing ability as one of the top-rated punters in the country.”

          DARIN PEART, DB, 5-9, 170, Brooklyn, N.Y./Erasmus Hall – MSG Varsity’s No. 3 player in NYC…247sports.com’s No. 13 player in state…had 32 tackles and 5 interceptions as senior…caught 7 passes, including 4 TDs…MVP of NUC 5-Star Camp among DBs.

          Priore: “Darin is an athletic cover corner who has the ability to contribute early in his college career.”

          JOSH VALENTIN, TE, 6-3, 280, Commack, N.Y./Commack – First team All-Long Island…All-League II and All-Suffolk County…also played defense, averaging 12 tackles per game…ideal fit as blocker in Seawolves’ running game.

          Priore: “At 280, Josh is a man playing on the edge…He’s very athletic for his size. He has the ability to set the edge but also can be effective in the passing game.”

          DONAVIN WASHINGTON, WR, 5-9, 170, Covina, Ca/Charter Oak – Sierra League co-Player of the Year…first team All-CIF Inland Valley…caught 93 passes for 1,570 yards and 12 TDs…had five games with 10 or more receptions and three games with at least 200 yards receiving…had 71-yard TD in SoCal vs. Arizona All-Star Game…Strong candidate for playing time as freshman…Has permission to run track at Stony Brook as well.

          Priore: “Donavin is a dynamic player with the ball in his hands as evident by his speed and ability in space.”

          JULIUS WINGATE, WR, 6-3, 185, Englewood, N.J./Dwight Morrow – Three-star recruit…ESPN’s No. 108 athlete nationally and No. 30 player in the state of New Jersey…made 26 catches for 475 yards and 8 TDs…played defense and made 48 tackles and had two interceptions…Invited to New York vs. New Jersey All-Star Game…Strong candidate to play as freshman.

          Priore: “Julius is a tall and physical receiver who should help us stretch the field.”

          JAKOB WOLFE, OL, 6-4, 260, Laguna Hills, Ca./JSerra Catholic – Played TE before moving to interior OL his last two seasons…All-Trinity League…Orange County top-ten lineman…Nike SPARQ Los Angeles All-Combine team…Played for No. 15-ranked team in California.

          Priore: “Jakob is a prototypical tackle who’s athletic and can play well in space.”

          JASON WRIGHT, TE, 6-1, 230, San Juan Capistrano, Ca./San Clemente – First team All-South Coast…made 31 catches for 314 yards and 3 TDs…was team’s offensive MVP and started at LB…throws the shot put and plays rugby.

          Priore: “Jason is an athletic tight end who will helps us in our different offensive schemes.”
