Steve Hayn is USMMA's new men's basketball coach

Steve Hayn has been named men's basketball coach at USMMA, interim athletic director Bill Fell said Thursday.

Hayn, who spent the last eight seasons at Dowling, was voted the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Division II coach of the year after guiding Dowling to a 22-7 record last year. He was 93-134 overall at Dowling.

Hayn, who lives in Brooklyn, said the move to Kings Point will allow him to be closer to home.

"In terms of the overall program and stability, it just provides that for me and my kids moving forward," he said.

Fell added, "I'm really excited about Steve coming here. He's proven to be a winner. Every team that he's coached he has made drastic improvements. I have high expectations that he can take us to the next level."

Hayn attended Comsewogue High School and captained the 1991 NCAA Division III Tournament team at Stony Brook University. He also has coached at Stevens Tech, Fredonia, Central Connecticut and Genesee.

Hayn takes over for interim coach David Muchnick, who was appointed last January when Danny Nee was placed on administrative leave for an unspecified incident involving a student at the academy. Nee later resigned.
