Duke lacrosse accuser's boyfriend dies
Staff and wire reports
DURHAM, N.C. -- A man police say was stabbed by a woman who falsely accused Duke lacrosse players of rape has died.
Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez Jr. told The Herald-Sun of Durham on Wednesday that Crystal Mangum's boyfriend, Reginald Daye, 46, had died.
According to WRAL and the newspaper, Daye had been taken to Duke University Hospital after being stabbed with a kitchen knife on April 3. Mangum, 32, is charged with assault and has been jailed since the stabbing. It was not clear where or how Daye died.
In March 2006, Mangum accused three Duke lacrosse players of sexually assaulting her during a team party. The charges against Collin Finnerty of Garden City; Reade Seligmann of Essex Fells, N.J.; and Dave Evans of Bethesda, Md., were dismissed in April 2007 after state Attorney General Roy Cooper said there was no evidence of an assault. The three are suing former District Attorney Mike Nifong and police investigators who handled their case.
Mangum was convicted in December of child abuse and damaging property. She had put her boyfriend's clothes in a bathtub and set them on fire while her three children and two police officers were in the apartment.
