Miguel Maysonet runs wild again

There simply has been no stopping Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet this season. One week after setting a personal best with 198 rushing yards in a comeback win over Colgate, Maysonet amassed 220 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries in a 23-3 win over Army on Saturday at Michie Stadium.

It was the first-ever win over an FBS school in Stony Brook history. Maysonet was voted preseason offensive player of the year in the Big South Conference, but some wondered how the addition of Iowa transfer Marcus Coker to the backfield might affect him. Apparently, it motivated Maysonet to step an already productive game up a few more notches.

He had 116 yards rushing in the first quarter alone at Army including a 49-yard TD and a 45-yard gain that might have turned into a 97-yard touchdown run except the Black Knights’ last defender managed to push Maysonet out of bounds.

Much of Maysonet’s yardage, including both those long runs, came over the left side of the offensive line. “When I see Miguel score, to me, it’s like I’m scoring,” said left tackle Scott Hernandez. “It’s the fruit of my work. We don’t get glory for what we do, so, seeing him do what he does is amazing. It’s reward enough for blocking.”

Through the first five games, Maysonet has carried 103 times for 800 yards and eight touchdowns. His average carry is 7.8 yards, and he’s averaging 160.0 yards per game.

The Seawolves matched Army’s rushing total of 273 yards. “We added a few little wrinkles because of what they ran on defense but nothing too crazy,” Maysonet said. “We were able to block whatever they threw at us, and you could see that by our rushing average…The wayour offensive line was blocking, the way our fullbacks and tight ends were blocking, I knew we were going to control the ball the whole game.”

Scoring on the fourth play of the game on his 49-yard run, Maysonet added, “was huge. For us to come out and score right away made us excited to play the game. It showed we could compete with them.”
