St. John’s hosts 'Dribble for the Cure' Saturday
St. John’s basketball coach Steve Lavin, who sat out all but four games last season while recovering from prostate cancer surgery, heads the school’s “Dribble for the Cure” event Saturday on the Queens campus from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The second edition of the event involves dribbling a basketball along a run/walk route for about 30 minutes to raise money to benefit pediatric cancer research in the New York City area.
Joining Lavin will be Hall of Fame coaches Lou Carnesecca and Jack Kaiser, current women’s basketball coach Joe Tartamella and former Knicks start John Starks. Last year’s inaugural event raised $21,000.
“This is a special day that will both raise funds for cancer research and create greater awareness for the importance of developing a cure for pediatric cancer,” Lavin said in a statement. “I personally encourage our fans to come join our student-athletes and staff as we collectively support this important cause. It’s going to be a memorable day of service for the St. John’s community.”
