Brown ends Stony Brook's six-game winning streak

The Stony Brook men’s basketball team snapped its six-game winning streak on Saturday, falling to Brown in Providence, Rhode Island, 71-69.

Elijah Olaniyi sank two free throws to put Stony Brook (8-2) within one at 55-54 with 7:09 left in the second half, but the Seawolves were unable to convert on a tying or go-ahead basket down the stretch. Brown (7-4) took its largest lead when Tamenang Choh made a layup to go ahead 64-55 with 4:26 remaining.

Akwasi Yeboah led Stony Brook with 23 points and six rebounds, his fifth 20-point effort of the season. Anthony Ochefu added 13 points and five boards, Jaron Cornish had eight points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Miles Latimer scored 11 points.

The Seawolves got off to a quick start, taking a 19-11 lead after Andrew Garcia hit a three-pointer with 12:25 left in the first half. But a jumper by Obi Okolie put Brown ahead 25-23 at the 4:57 mark, and Brown would take a 35-30 lead into the half.

It was not a typical performance from the Seawolves. They shot just 11-for-24 from the free throw line and were outrebounded, 46-31. Stony Brook entered the game ranked 15th in Division I in rebounding with a plus-10.1 margin per game.

"It was a weird game today. It really came down to the hustle plays and 50/50 balls,” said Stony Brook coach Jeff Boals. “To lose by two the way we played … it came down to one possession where we could've done something different. But Brown, the way they played, they deserved to win today."
