Stony Brook University football preview: Three questions for the 2018 season

The Stony Brook football team is well equipped to compete in the Colonial Athletic Conference, but as with the beginning of any season, the Seawolves have a few questions. 

1. How will the backfield take shape?

The area of need Stony Brook is best equipped to handle comes at running back. Stacey Bedell graduated, leaving the Seawolves with a glaring hole. Bedell, a four-year star, is third all-time in program history with 2,954 rushing yards.

Bedell was involved in a timeshare last season with Donald Liotine and Jordan Gowins, who both return. Still, replacing Bedell's production in that trio is key. Kameron Pickett, a transfer from Buffalo, is a likely candidate to receive touches.

2. Who will be the go-to wide receiver?

It's Donavin Washington's time in the spotlight. The versatile wideout is tasked with replacing dynamic playmaker Ray Bolden. Washington caught 40 passes for 354 yards and four touchdowns last season and is  the top returning pass catcher. Tight end Cal Daniels also returns after catching 27 passes.

Nick Anderson, Andrew Trent, Liotine and Gowins all had their hands in the receiving game last year and could have expanded roles. Michigan transfer Tyrone Wheatley, son of former Giants running back Tyrone Wheatley Sr., could find his way into the mix as well.

Temple graduate transfer Marshall Ellick played in 26 games for the Owls and could be involved.

3. Who will break out on defense?

Shayne Lawless and Noah McGinty return to anchor the defense, but they'll need help. Defensive back Gavin Heslop is a candidate to cement himself as a lockdown corner in the CAA after breaking up 11 passes in 13 games last season.

EJ Fineran, Synceir Malone and Peterson Octavien are others on the verge of breaking out.
