Stony Brook women's basketball team picked to finish first in America East

The Stony Brook women’s basketball team was picked to finish first in the America East Conference in the preseason coaches’ poll announced Wednesday morning.
The Seawolves, the defending America East tournament champions, received six first-place votes and 78 total points. Maine, which lost to Stony Brook in last season’s America East tournament title game, was picked to finish second with three first-place votes and 74 total points.
Stony Brook finished second during the regular season in 2020-21, but captured the tournament title with a 64-60 win at top seed Maine to clinch the program’s first NCAA Tournament bid.
Key players India Pagan and Anastasia Warren return for Stony Brook this season and both were named to the preseason all-conference team. Pagan, a graduate forward who played for Puerto Rico in the Tokyo Olympics, averaged nine points and five rebounds last season. Warren, a senior guard, was named the most outstanding player of the America East tournament after scoring a career-high 31 points against Maine in the title game. Warren averaged 10.6 points, four rebounds and two assists last season.
Ashley Langford is set to begin her first season as Stony Brook’s head coach after taking over for Caroline McCombs, who left in April to become the head coach at George Washington.
