Blind golfer tournament at Middle Bay needs volunteers

Not only is Ted Fass of Rockville Centre the director of the 67th U.S. Blind Golf Association Championship, Aug. 6 and 7 at Middle Bay Country Club in Oceanside, he is playing in it. And not only is he playing in it, but he says, "I plan to win it."
He does need some help, though. The national championship for blind golfers is asking for volunteers to help in scorekeeping. You can sign up for either day or both. The tournament will provide continental breakfast. Play begins at 7 a.m. Monday, 10:30 Tuesday, with volunteer training a half-hour before each. The contact number is (516) 764-2002.
NewsmakersAfter Kelly Shon of Port Washington missed the cut at the U.S. Women's Open earlier this month, she stayed at the Open course in Kohler, Wis., working on the range and practice green.
It paid off. Shon had the best score at a U.S. Women's Amateur Sectional qualifier in New Jersey the next day. So she will be in her second consecutive national championship, next week at the Country Club of Cleveland.
Matt Csillag, who is entering his junior year at Syosset High School, won a qualifying tournament at PGA National in West Palm Beach, Fla., and will be part of the U.S. team at the World Maccabi Games in Israel next summer.
Fresh Meadow pro Matt Dobyns, who won the national club pro title in California last month, will be featured in the CBS program "The Road to the PGA Championship," which airs Sunday at 2 p.m.
Dobyns, along with Mark Brown (Tam O'Shanter) and Darrell Kestner (Deepdale) will play in the major championship at Kiawah Island next week . . . Montauk Downs assistant pro Paul Dickinson and Pine Hollow head pro Mike Meehan qualified for next year's club pro tournament in Oregon by tying for fourth and sixth, respectively, this week in the Met PGA Championship at Rockland Country Club.
Jacques Leblanc, a photography enthusiast from Center Moriches, has one of his shots on display at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla. Leblanc was shooting near the Maidstone Club in East Hampton just after dawn one day and captured a golfer carrying his bag through the mist. He entered the World Golf Village Journal Great Photo Contest and finished second.
Reminder: Bethpage Black will be closed a week from Monday in preparation for the Barclays, the PGA Tour's first playoff tournament, to be Aug. 23-26.
