2,000-yard rushers in NFL history

Only seven players in NFL history have rushed for more than 2,000 yards in one season.

Eric Dickerson: 2,105 yards

Los Angeles Rams, 1984

In just his second year in the NFL, Dickerson averaged 131.6 yards per game (5.55 per carry) en route to the best single-season rushing total in NFL history. He ran for more than 200 yards only twice but was aided by a 16-game schedule to become the second RB to ever break the 2,000-yard mark. Dickerson scored 14 touchdowns that season.

Adrian Peterson: 2,097 yards

Minnesota Vikings, 2012

The most amazing thing about Peterson's season wasn't just that he reached the 2,000-yard mark — it was that he did it exactly one year removed from surgery to repair a torn ACL. Peterson had 100-yard games in each of his last 10 games, with seven games of 150+ yards and two 200-plus yard games.

Jamal Lewis: 2,066 yards

Baltimore Ravens, 2003

Buoyed by an NFL-record 295 yards in Week 2, Lewis added a 205-yard game in Week 16 to post the second-best single-season rushing total ever. Lewis averaged 129.1 yards per game (5.3 per carry) and scored 14 touchdowns.

Barry Sanders: 2,053 yards

Detroit Lions, 1997

Here's a sick stat that speaks to Sanders' talent: In the first two games of 1997, Sanders totaled 53 rushing yards. He then ripped off 14 straight 100-yard games, still an NFL record, en route to 2,053. Sanders averaged 6.13 yards per carry (128.3 per game) and scored 11 touchdowns for the playoff-bound Lions.

Terrell Davis: 2,008 yards

Denver Broncos, 1998

Davis needed 178 yards in the final game of the season to break the barrier. He averaged 125.5 yards per game (5.12) per game and scored 21 touchdowns en route to a second straight Super Bowl victory.

Chris Johnson: 2,006 yards

Tennessee Titans, 2009

After a season-low 34 yards in Week 5, Johnson ripped off 11 straight 100-yard games to break 2,000. Johnson averaged 125.4 yards per game (5.6 per carry) and scored 14 touchdowns in just his second year in the NFL.

O.J. Simpson: 2,003 yards

Buffalo Bills, 1973

Let's just stick to football here. Simpson was the first back to rush for 2,000-plus yards in NFL history, and the only one to do it in 14 games. Simpson had 12 touchdowns and averaged 6.03 yards per carry and 143.1 yards per game. Simpson eclipsed the mark during a 200-yard day against the Jets.
