Bennett so happy about not being a Cowboys he nearly cries
Martellus Bennett caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from David Carr in the second quarter of the first preseason game. For a player in his fifth season, it should not have been an emotional experience. But for Bennett, it was a tear-jerker.
“It was very, very exciting,” the tight end said. “I almost cried after I scored because I’ve been through a lot over the last four years, ups and downs, and I was very unhappy with the situation I was in.”
Bennett spent the last four seasons with the Cowboys where he was overshadowed by Jason Witten. The outspoken Bennett has won over fans with his outward distaste for all things Dallas since arriving in New York, but if he continues to play as he did last night he’ll truly have Giants fans’ hearts.
“Everybody here has embraced me as a player and as a person and I’m just trying to continue to grow and be a part of what they’re doing,” he said.
Basically every pass that Bennett catches for the Giants will be a plus. His primary job is to block. And he did that well against the Jaguars, too, giving a little extra push on the D.J. Ware touchdown run.
“I had a couple of good blocks tonight and I pride myself on my blocking,” Bennett said. “I’m just happy I’m in a situation where I get to do both. There’s so much more in store for me and I’ve just got to keep working, keep working, keep working … I don’t want to be a good player. I’m trying to be a great player at the end of the day. So I think it’s a good start. There’s a lot of things I could have done better and I think there’s a lot of things I did well. It’s a lot of growth for me in this system and this city.”
