Tom Coughlin said you’d have to be a “clinical something-or-other” to understand what’s going on with Marvin Austin’s back. Apparently Austin isn’t one of those. Because Coughlin’s official thoughts on the injury are a lot gloomier than Austin’s were just earlier today.

“They’re doing more tests,” Coughlin said. “He said he felt pretty good today. A lot of the early symptoms are no longer there. But they’re going to do another set of tests on him. We’re hoping that within a reasonable amount of time he can come back and play.”

Coughlin would not say whether the clinical something-or-others think Austin’s back issues are muscular or structural.

“They’re dealing with some issues there, yeah,” he said. “I’m not going to tell you exactly what it is. We’re going to have to wait and see. He’s not going to be able to play this week.”
