Could be last time in Albany for Giants
ALBANY -- Usually when the Giants break camp, they leave Albany with a hardy "See you next year!" This year, there might not be a next year.
The team's contract with the University at Albany expires after this season and given the limited number of practices that teams are now afforded in the preseason, the lack of an indoor facility in the area if weather becomes an issue and the Giants' new Timex Performance Center at home in New Jersey, there is speculation they will not be back in 2013.
President and CEO John Mara said this week that the Giants would have internal discussions about the future of training camp in several weeks.
"We've done it both ways and I can comment on pluses and minuses for either way," Tom Coughlin said of having training camp in Albany and at home, as they did last year because of the lockout. "Last summer, we were home and it didn't turn out too bad."
Coughlin long has been considered the driving force behind keeping the camp in Albany, away from the distractions of the New York City area. But after experiencing it last summer, perhaps he has changed his mind.
As always, his main concern is the quality of the practices. Coughlin said he is happy with the facilities at Albany . . . "except when it rains."
Giant steps
WR Hakeem Nicks, who came off PUP on Monday, will be eligible to practice fully with the team next Monday after being limited for three work days . . . WR Ramses Barden missed practice with soreness in the ankle that was surgically repaired two seasons ago . . . WR Jerrel Jernigan, who muffed a punt in the game against Jacksonville, was not with the group returning punts early in practice. He did make several impressive catches while running routes during the workouts, though . . . S Antrel Rolle has practiced the last two days with a wrap on his right thigh. "He's sore," Coughlin said, "but it's not going to stop him."
