Giants' Coughlin, Reese and Manning take Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS
Jerry Reese, Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning all took the plunge for ALS in the Ice Bucket Challenge on Thursday after practice.
Coughlin said he was doing the challenge in memory of his friend Rick Murray, who passed away after fighting ALS for seven years. "An inspiration to all who knew him," Coughlin said. "In honor of Rick Murray and his fight against ALS, I'm accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge."
He then passed the challenge along to three other head coaches in the NFL - Gus Bradley of the Jaguars, John Fox of the Broncos and Mike Smith of the Falcons - as well as Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. Odierno is a close friend of Coughlin's and a big Giants fan who routinely stops by practices and games as his schedule allows.
As for Reese, he challenged his daughter Jasmine as well as Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman and Col. Greg Gadson, the soldier who lost both of his legs in Iraq and has been with the Giants since 2007. Reese did add a wrinkle to his challenge, upping the ante for Gettleman, a former Giants personnel director.
"A couple of people requested you wear a Speedo," Reese said. "I don't know how that will go, but it's a request from some of your friends here."
Finally, Manning challenged former offensive linemen Shaun O'Hara and David Diehl.
Then Zak DeOssie and Mathias Kiwanuka dunked each of the three, one at a time, with a bucket of ice cold water.
"Takes your breath away," Manning said after the dousing.
Interestingly, Manning removed his cleats before the ceremony. The Giants can't have their quarterback going around in soggy shoes.
