Giants' David Wilson faces biggest test of his career Monday morning

David Wilson approached his potentially career-defining appointment with spine specialist Frank Cammisa on Monday morning with more excitement than trepidation.

"Less than 24 hrs. away then I can be back out there wit [sic] my team," the running back wrote on Instagram on Sunday, a message accompanied by a picture of him carrying a football. It was the latest in a series of positive postings Wilson has made in the past week.

While Wilson seems to expect to return to the field -- perhaps as soon as Tuesday's practice -- most are bracing for less positive news after he suffered a burner in practice last week. He is six months removed from cervical fusion surgery and has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. He did not travel with the team to Canton for Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game.

There is a chance that Cammisa will recommend that Wilson never play football again. Even if the evaluation is not that dire, the Giants are expected to proceed with extreme caution and might not allow Wilson to return to the field.

General manager Jerry Reese said last week that Wilson will not be back on the field until "we know one thousand percent that he can be out there."

Stray still stomping

Michael Strahan may be a Hall of Famer, but he's not above a good old-fashioned stomp. When the former Giant was introduced in a pregame ceremony, he came onto the field and gave his signature leap and stomp that became a symbol of the 2007 Super Bowl-winning Giants. He quickly was swarmed by the current Giants, who joined in the jumping.

"That was fun," said Eli Manning, one of only three remaining Strahan teammates on the Giants. "I know a lot of guys hadn't gotten an opportunity to witness that. I'm glad he got to do it one last time, but some of these new teammates got to hear him talk and do his thing."

Giant steps

TE Daniel Fells left the Giants' 17-13 victory over the Bills with a knee injury he suffered in the second quarter . . . S Cooper Taylor missed a block that led to a blocked punt and CB Zack Bowman was flagged for defensive holding in the red zone late in the second quarter, but both found redemption when Bowman broke up a pass in the end zone and Taylor intercepted it for a touchback with 20 seconds left in the second quarter. Bowman also intercepted a pass in the end zone on the first Bills drive of the third quarter . . . Manning was 6-for-7 for 43 yards, but only two of his passes were completed to a wide receiver (both to Jerrel Jernigan). He did not throw in the direction of receivers Victor Cruz or Rueben Randle . . . A pregame moment of silence was held for Bills founder Ralph Wilson Jr. and the other four Hall of Famers who have passed away since last year's game. Sunday night's game was the first in Bills history without Wilson . . . Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Harry Carson served as honorary captains for the teams.
