Justin Trattou is back on the football field with the Giants and trying to keep his dream alive after spending most of last year on injured reserve with a foot and ankle injury.

“It feels good to be back out here,” the 6-5, 255-pound defensive end said. “I’m 100 percent … After missing a whole year, I could definitely use all the work. (I’m) definitely getting better and starting to feel how I used to feel when I was playing.”

Now entering his third season, Trattou has only appeared in six games – all during his rookie year – and made one tackle. Since entering the league he has been on and off the practice squad and active roster. His main focus as he starts this season is to get better and make an impact after his injury.

“It feels great to be healthy, running around full speed,” he said. “Attack the offseason as hard as I can and be prepared in August.”

He’ll have a chance to carve a role for himself. With Osi Umenyiora signing in Atlanta and Jason Pierre-Paul sidelined by a recent back surgery, the Giants will need some of their young defensive ends to contribute. The group of candidates includes Trattou, Adrian Tracy, Adewale Ojomo and rookie Damontre Moore.

“You never know how long you are going to play this game,” Trattou said. “I have to enjoy it and make the most out of my opportunities. Just trying to keep the dream alive.”
