Nicks sits, Beatty in limbo, and Wilson sticks his snout out from the doghouse

Hakeem Nicks was the only Giants player who was not in pads and not participating even a little bit in practice. That’s a point of concern. Remember last week when he missed a few practices but was at least walking around, jumping into some light drills and walk-through reps, and catching passes for the quarterbacks as they warmed up? Tom Coughlin said he looked “frisky” back then.

Well, his friskiness was missing today in the portion of practice we saw. Nicks was mostly sedentary, sitting on an exercise bike while the rest of the team stretched and went through drills. Only late in the portion of practice we saw did he amble over to the receivers to stand by and watch them work.

It could be just a precautionary rest, a management type of situation. But it’s something to keep an eye on.

As for the other players, the good news was that both Prince Amukamara and Michael Coe seemed to be doing at least a little. Amukamara did more than Coe, but both were in pads and participating in drills.

“He will try to pick up where we left off Monday and see if we can allow him to continue to work,” Coughlin said of Amukamara. “He does have some issues. He’s just fighting his way through them.”

When it was pointed out to Coughlin that Will Beatty was not on the injury report, the reporter phrased the question: “I guess that means he’s no longer injured?” Coughlin’s response represented his frustration with injuries perfectly. “I ask that question myself,” he said.

Coughlin said Beatty will continue to get practice snaps and try to “catch up” with the time he missed during the preseason. What Coughlin would not say was whether Beatty will be the starting left tackle this week … or ever again. “We’ll see.”

And finally, Coughlin was asked about rookie David Wilson who fumbled against the Cowboys on his second NFL carry and did not get another offensive snap. Coughlin said Wilson will be included in the gameplan against the Bucs.

“He’s a little out of the doghouse,” Coughlin said. “A little bit out of the doghouse.”
