Tom Coughlin said on Monday that he was "hoping for the best" when guard Geoff Schwartz had his dislocated toe evaluated in Charlotte. On Tuesday morning, that's exactly what he received.

After examination and evaluation by foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson, it was determined that Schwartz will not require surgery, season-ending or otherwise, and is expected to return to the field before too long. He'll almost certainly miss the first several games of the regular season, but after wearing a protective boot on the injured foot for the next 7-10 days, he'll be re-evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

"This is just a minor setback," Schwartz said through Giants.com. "I plan on attacking the rehab program so I can get back on the field as soon as possible with my teammates and help us win games."

Of course, it's easy for week-to-week to turn into month-to-month. Schwartz still is out indefinitely and rookie Weston Richburg will likely fill his spot at left guard in the meantime. There is a chance when Schwartz returns that Richburg will have established himself at the position and it no longer will be open. In that case, Schwartz could wind up moving to right guard and replace either Brandon Mosley or John Jerry at that position. Right guard is the position Schwartz has played for most of his career and he has said in the past that he is more comfortable there. Returning Schwartz to that spot could improve his play and the level of the entire line.

So maybe this "hoping for the best" thing will work out.
