Romeo Crennel prefers Chiefs over Giants
It's not clear if Romeo Crennel is the Giants' first choice to be defensive coordinator. But they've learned that they are not his first choice.
The former Browns head coach who won three Super Bowl rings running the defense for the Patriots will give the Chiefs the "first shot" at signing him, according to his agent, Joe Linta. While Crennel and Tom Coughlin share a history as former Giants assistants, Crennel will rejoin fellow ex-Patriots Charlie Weis and Scott Pioli if he does sign on as the defensive coordinator of the Chiefs.
The Giants have other options, but they too appear to be in play with other teams. They are waiting to hear from Perry Fewell, the Bills' former interim head coach and defensive coordinator who interviewed with the Bears on Monday. Newsday reported on Monday night that Fewell is home with his wife discussing his options and although neither the Giants nor the Bears made him a formal offer he and his agent were "expecting options."
Another candidate, Jim Haslett, reportedly interviewed with the Redskins this week but has not been offered that job yet. Mike Zimmer, the Bengals' defensive coordinator who was considered a front-runner for the Redskins job under Mike Shanahan, re-signed with the Bengals.
Meanwhile, former Giants coordinator Bill Sheridan who was fired last week interviewed with the Dolphins to become their linebackers coach and reportedly won the job.
