Declaring it a "perfect competitive opportunity," Jim Harbaugh accepted the job as coach of the San Francisco 49ers Friday and said his goal is to win a Lombardi Trophy for "one of the legendary franchises in all of football."

The successful Stanford coach gets to remain in the Bay Area, moving to the NFL after four years with the Cardinal. A longtime NFL quarterback, he replaces fired coach Mike Singletary. ESPN reported Harbaugh's deal is for $25 million over five years.

The Cardinal (12-1) finished with a school-record 12 wins following a 40-12 victory over Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. The 49ers were 6-10.

Titans keep Fisher

Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams announced that coach Jeff Fisher would be back for a 17th season with the club. The decision comes two days after Adams, 88, agreed the Titans needed to part with Vince Young five seasons after he ordered the quarterback drafted.

Young was 30-17, not counting his lone playoff loss, but he told off Fisher in front of the team after suffering a season-ending injury Nov. 21.

Fisher is under contract for 2011 for $6.5 million, but changes to his coaching staff are expected. His Titans slumped from a 5-2 start to a 6-10 finish, losing eight of their final nine.

Sparano still waiting

The Dolphins postponed a late-afternoon news conference to discuss the retention of coach Tony Sparano, and rescheduled the session for Saturday. A spokesman gave no reason for the postponement.

The Miami Herald reported that owner Stephen Ross earlier this week scheduled a meeting for Friday with former Browns coach Eric Mangini, according to sources independent of the team. Dolphins sources said the meeting has since been canceled.

Brackett fined

The NFL fined Indianapolis linebacker Gary Brackett $35,000 Friday for his blindside hit on Titans long snapper Ken Amato in Sunday's game. Brackett has been fined three times this season for hits.- AP
