Carl Lawson called an audible after Jets' loss
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Carl Lawson did something he normally doesn’t do after game day: He chilled out.
Lawson, unhappy with the loss and not satisfied with his play, wanted to go and watch film immediately to start mentally correcting his mistakes. But this was Lawson’s first game since the 2020 season and his family was there, including his father who nearly died after having COVID-19. Lawson decided the film can wait.
“It was awesome, just to be able to be with my family,” Lawson said. “I had to take a step back because the first thing I wanted to do was get on film and be upset about the game. Then again, I was like, ‘I have all these wonderful people in front of me.’ That’s a discredit to them and a discredit to the work I put in to get there.
“I took a couple of hours after the game just to let loose — something I rarely do — and just be appreciative that I was able to get to that point and now I have to keep working from there.”
Lawson missed all of 2021 with a ruptured Achilles. The edge rusher is often hard on himself, but he said he felt “extremely blessed” to be playing again and he needed to enjoy the moment.
“Of course, I came off the field thinking about the negatives of the game,” Lawson said, “but then I had to take a step back and be like, ‘Man, there was a point in time [last year] I’m on a scooter.’ So just to be able to get back out there, I was very thankful. I just have to keep going forward and build off of that.”
Wilson progressing
Zach Wilson was on the field doing individual work for the second straight day. Offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said Wilson, who is recovering from a knee injury, participated in 7-on-7 drills on Wednesday. Wilson is moving well. The Jets said he could return Week 4 at the earliest.
“It was good to get him back out there,” LaFleur said. “Just to be able to get out there and do some 7-on-7, it was good.”
Two-minute drill
