Darrelle Revis cleared for running, lifting; won't practice
Darrelle Revis' status for Sunday’s game against the Steelers is still up in the air, but the Jets got encouraging news about their star cornerback.
Revis, who suffered a mild concussion in the season opener against Buffalo, has been cleared to resume normal activities (i.e., running and lifting). Rex Ryan, however, said the defensive back will not practice Wednesday.
“Obviously, as the week goes on we hope that he can progress further and do more things,” the Jets coach said. “But obviously, we will follow the NFL protocol and lean on the trainers and doctors so that hasn’t changed.”
Per NFL protocol, Revis cannot be cleared to play until he has a normal neurological examination (compared to his baseline score) and is cleared by both the team physician and an independent neurological consultant.
If the All-Pro corner is unable to face the Steelers, third-year cornerback Kyle Wilson will start in his place.
Ryan said he feels “great” about his secondary – and that includes Wilson, who “really improved, in my opinion." Both Revis and Wilson had interceptions on back-to-back Bills’ drives last Sunday to help the offense cruise to a 48-28 win.
Revis' status for Week 2 is key for the Jets, who will head into a hostile Heinz Field environment this weekend. “Obviously there’s stages he has to get to,” Ryan said of Revis, adding that even if the cornerback gets better, Revis likely won’t endure live contact until “much later” in the week.
Revis was kicked in the head accidentally by teammate Bart Scott, who was running to make a tackle on Bills running back C.J. Spiller in the fourth quarter.
