Davante Adams, Aaron Rodgers excited to reunite with the Jets
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Aaron Rodgers was driving home from the Jets’ disappointing loss Monday night when he got a call from Davante Adams. Still upset, Rodgers “wasn’t in the mood” to talk to anyone so he didn’t answer.
The two eventually spoke, talked about the game, and then Adams sprung the news on Rodgers close to 1 a.m.
“He said he was getting on a plane, and my heart dropped,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “I was like, ‘To where?’ He said New York. I said, ‘Really?’”
A huge smile came across Rodgers’ face as he relayed the end of the story.
“Definitely put him in a much better mood after the game when I let him know,” Adams said.
Rodgers is ecstatic that the Jets traded for Adams. The two close friends are reunited and, for the time being, living with each other. Adams is staying at Rodgers’ home.
They’re going over plays and signals at Rodgers’ house. They came to the Jets’ practice facility together. It’s been just like old times for the two ex-Packers.
“He sat next to me in the team meeting and I turned to him and just said, ‘Man, how crazy is this?’” Rodgers said. “It’s something that when we get together in the offseason we joke about, but it never seemed like a possibility or it was going to happen.”
It was in the works for a long time and finally happened on Tuesday when the Jets sent a conditional 2025 third-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for Adams.
The six-time Pro Bowl receiver requested a trade two weeks ago. He informed the Raiders that he wanted to play for the Jets.
Adams, too, is thrilled to be back with Rodgers and hopes they can pick up where they left off with Green Bay, where they spent eight years together.
“He might not be as good as he used to be,” Adams joked. “It’s great just being able to be with my guy. First and foremost, just being able to spend time with him every day again is something that I put a lot of value on. Having him as my quarterback again, he’s part of why I am who I am and why I turned into the player [I am].”
Rodgers said, “I expect to be on the same page. I’m hoping that we click.”
Adams, who missed his final three games as Raider with a hamstring injury, will make his Jets’ debut Sunday night against the Steelers. Adams was a full participant in the Jets’ walk-through. He said he ran and jogged around and felt fine.
The Jets (2-4) hope Adams will solve some of their offensive woes. They’ve lost three straight games – all by six points or fewer – and have struggled scoring touchdowns. Adams and Rodgers didn’t have that issue in Green Bay. Adams caught 68 touchdown passes over his last six seasons there.
Adams asked out of Las Vegas because he felt the Raiders weren’t using him the right way and letting him have an impact on the game. He said he didn’t want “that helpless feeling.” He expects it to be different now that he’s back with his old quarterback and in a system he knows well.
“Sometimes you got to make it easier and get to a situation that allows you to be yourself,” Adams said.
The Jets want Adams to be the player he’s been his whole career. He got his No. 17 from rookie Malachi Corely, who will now wear 14. Adams wouldn’t reveal what it cost him, saying only, “We had some talks and worked through it.”
Adams’ presence will take some targets away from Garrett Wilson. It also could open things up for the third-year receiver. The more attention Adams gets, the less Wilson may get. Adams is looking forward to playing with and helping Wilson understand what Rodgers thinks and expects.
“One of the main things that Aaron and I have is our connection,” Adams said. “The nonverbals, reading body language, just understanding how his mind works. A lot of those small things like that are key to having success.
“It’s a 2-4 football team. It could easily be 5-1 if we did it the right way and clicked up on a few more opportunities that were out there. They’ve never been far away. I just think it’s a few of the fine details that you got to lock in on, get used to and hopefully I can bring some of that.”
