Grading the Jets
OFFENSE
A Mark Sanchez's first-quarter interception aside, the Jets' offense had one heck of a game. The 48 points Sunday were the most for the franchise in a season opener and the most since they put up 56 points against Arizona in 2008. Two touchdowns apiece from Jeremy Kerley and Stephen Hill, plus the play of the offensive line helped put the game out of reach. Kerley became the first Jet to return a punt and catch a pass for a touchdown in the same game. The offensive line, which surrendered 39 sacks of Sanchez last season, didn't give up a sack or quarterback hit.
DEFENSE
B+ First-quarter interceptions by Darrelle Revis and Kyle Wilson got the offense back on the field; Antonio Cromartie's pick-6 was the icing on the cake. Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick took a beating from the unit, which recorded five QB hits. Jets safeties LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell proved they are truly playmakers, totaling 11 tackles. The defense would have gotten an A had it not allowed the Bills to double their point total (14) in the fourth quarter. Calvin Pace admitted the defense needs to improve on tackling.
SPECIAL TEAMS
A- Kerley returned one punt and he made it count. The slot receiver's 68-yard return for a touchdown was the longest by a Jet since Terance Mathis' 98-yarder vs. the Cowboys in 1990. One criticism: The unit allowed a 27-yard punt return by Leodis McKelvin in the fourth, which put the Bills on the Jets' 41 and set up a Stevie Johnson touchdown.
COACHING
A Rex Ryan gets an A just for being a trouper after Bills tight end Scott Chandler collided with him on the sideline. Though he got knocked down, Ryan laughed off the hit -- just as he laughed off the naysayers all week. After a disappointing offensive showing during the preseason, the Jets coach got his guys refocused and ready to play when it counted.
