The Jets made a big move at kicker on Wednesday, announcing the addition of 242-pounder Harrison Mevis to the roster.
Mevis, known as “The Thiccer Kicker” for a body type that is unusual for his position, is coming off his first season in the UFL in which he made 20 of 21 field goals, with a long of 56, for the Birmingham Stallions. His only miss was from 63 yards.
Anders Carlson, one of five kickers the Jets used last season and the only one who remained on the roster for the spring, was waived to make room for Mevis. Carlson was 8-for-10 for the Jets after signing with them late in the year following his release from the 49ers.
The move leaves the Jets without anyone who has ever attempted an NFL kick of any kind. Rookie Caden Davis from Ole Miss also is on the roster as a placekicker after signing as an undrafted player in May. The Jets also have a rookie punter in Kal Kroeger after parting ways with veteran Thomas Morstead earlier this offseason.
This will be Mevis’ second chance to make an NFL team. Last summer he was in a training camp battle for the job with the Panthers. Eddy Pineiro eventually won that position, and Mevis was released in mid-August.
Prior to that, Mevis was an All-American at the University of Missouri in 2021 when his 26 field goals led the FBS. In his college career his longest field goal was 61 yards, kicked in 2023. He was listed on the Tigers' 2023 roster as being 5-11 and weighing 243 pounds.
