Adam Gase was 'surprised' by Jamal Adams' parting shots
Adam Gase thought he had a good relationship with Jamal Adams. He was surprised at the parting shots the All-Pro safety fired at him before being traded to Seattle.
"I thought it was good, but obviously he felt different," Gase said. "I never had any poor interactions with him. He was somebody I talked to a lot and communicated with. Once the offseason hit, I’m not in charge of contracts. I’m not involved in those talks."
Adams wanted out after the Jets decided not to offer him a contract extension. He was critical of Jets officials in an interview published the day before he was sent to Seattle. He said Gase is not "the right leader" for the Jets and that the coach doesn’t have good relationships with everyone.
"It just surprised me," Gase said. "But it is what it is."
The Jets will face Adams for the first time Sunday in Seattle, and Gase isn’t sure if he will speak with him.
"I don’t know how that’s going to go," he said. "I try not to mess with too many guys before the game. I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes."
The winless Jets have missed Adams, but the two first-round picks (2021, 2022) and the 2021 third-rounder they received from Seattle will help them in their rebuild.
"Both sides got what they wanted," Gase said. "At the end of the day, I think it will benefit both sides, too."
Mims out Sunday
Rookie receiver Denzel Mims will not be able to play Sunday after returning home to Texas for a family emergency and falling out of the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol. Mims will need five straight days of negative tests once he returns to New Jersey before he’s eligible to rejoin the Jets.
"The protocols are what they are," Gase said. "He had to handle family business, which we support because we felt like this was the right thing for him to do."
The Jets could be down another receiver. Jamison Crowder, a new addition to the injury report, was limited in practice Thursday by a calf injury.
Linebacker Jordan Jenkins (shoulder) didn’t practice for the second straight day. The injury occurred in the first half last Sunday. Gase said Jenkins’ "shoulder didn’t look like it was intact" when he came off the field, but Jenkins finished the game.
Gase said Jenkins is one of the toughest players he’s been around, expects him to play again this season and wouldn’t rule him out this week.
Two-minute drill
Gase said there’s a chance cornerback Bless Austin will be active Sunday. He was designated to return to practice from injured reserve Wednesday after missing three games with a neck injury . . . The Jets’ nominee for Walter Payton Man of the Year is no longer on the team. Cornerback Pierre Desir, waived last month, now is with the Ravens.
