Jets' secondary gets another test this week against Green Bay's Davante Adams

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — For the second straight week, a top-flight receiver will face the Jets at MetLife Stadium, and their secondary will have its hands full.

So much of the talk about Sunday’s visit by the Green Bay Packers has surrounded future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but what about his right-hand man, receiver Davante Adams?

Adams ranks fourth in the NFL in yards (1,315) and is tied for second in touchdowns with the Colts’ Eric Ebron (12). He was kept out of the end zone against the Bears last week but caught eight passes for 119 yards.

Rodgers and Adams are one of the NFL’s most frequent tandems. Adams has been targeted 151 times, one fewer than Falcons receiver Julio Jones’ league-leading 152 targets.

“He’s similar to [Houston’s DeAndre] Hopkins last week,” Jets coach Todd Bowles said. “They use him a lot; you don’t know where he’s going to line up. [Rodgers] trusts him. They have great chemistry. He has great hands and great speed. He’ll be another challenge.”

Hopkins was targeted 11 times against the Jets and caught 10 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns in last Saturday’s 29-22 win over the Jets.

The Jets are 19th in passing yards allowed at 243.4 per game and are tied for 15th with 23 touchdown passes allowed. They are tied for ninth in interceptions with 13.

Bowles described the Jets’ secondary play this season as inconsistent. “We’ve made some plays, gotten turnovers and given up some plays that we shouldn’t have given up,” Bowles said. “For the most part, those guys are fighting and been solid. Last week, Hopkins made a great play on [Morris Claiborne], but he was right there and we just have to come down and make those plays.”

The Jets hope their own star Adams — recent Pro Bowl selection Jamal — will help curtail the production of the visiting Adams. Bowles again lauded the accomplishments of his outstanding safety Friday, saying that of the players he has coached, Adams is among his favorites.

“It’s just his personality,” Bowles said. “He’s someone you click with. I have a lot of guys I could call favorites, we’d be up here all day. But our personalities click, we see things the same way, the humor is the same, our outlook on life is the same. Although I’m older, I can relate to some of the things that he sees.”

Notes & quotes: Linebacker Kevin Pierre-Louis (shoulder) did not practice and is doubtful. Defensive back Darryl Roberts (toe) and linebacker Jordan Jenkins (ankle) were limited in practice and are questionable.
