FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Jeremy Kerley likely will miss Thursday night's game in New England after being diagnosed with a concussion.

The Jets' slot receiver suffered a violent hit from Buccaneers safety Mark Barron -- and two other defenders closing in -- late in the second quarter of Sunday's 18-17 win over Tampa Bay. The blow knocked Kerley's helmet loose and he lay face down, clutching his head, for several minutes.

Though the receiver returned to the game, he did not practice Monday and was listed with a "head injury." A team spokesman later clarified that Kerley passed in-game and postgame concussion protocol tests Sunday but exhibited symptoms Monday morning. As a result, the trainers decided to "err on the side of caution" and list Kerley with a concussion.

Wideout Stephen Hill said his teammate assured him on the sideline Sunday that he was "fine." But Hill, who was standing a few feet from Kerley at the time of the hit, told Newsday: "I came in here today and he said: 'I'm feeling kinda woozy.' "

If Kerley can't play against the Patriots, rookie Ryan Spadola could get significant playing time. "He did great in the preseason," Hill said. "We're actually looking for him to step up this week if JK cannot come back."

The Jets re-signed QB Brady Quinn, waived LB Danny Lansanah and signed WR Rahsaan Vaughn . . . Mark Sanchez (shoulder), Kellen Winslow (knee, rest) and Quinton Coples (ankle) did not practice. Antonio Cromartie (hip), Jeff Cumberland (chin), Clyde Gates (knee), Kenrick Ellis (back), Nick Mangold (elbow), Santonio Holmes (foot) and Sheldon Richardson (shoulder) were limited. Rookie cornerback Dee Milliner (hip) practiced fully.
