Jets' Darrelle Revis has mild concussion

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Darrelle Revis' status for Sunday's game in Pittsburgh remains unclear after the Jets star cornerback was diagnosed with a mild concussion by team doctors.

A Jets spokesman announced the news shortly before Rex Ryan addressed the media Monday. The coach had few details about Revis' condition or his availability for the Week 2 matchup against the Steelers.

"What I'll say is, with me, I'll always lean on our trainers and our doctors,'' Ryan said. "With any injury at all, but especially a head injury, you're going to err on the side of caution. We'll see how he progresses during the week.''

Ryan said on ESPN New York radio Monday that Revis attended meetings and "seems to be doing fine." But, the true test -- literally -- will come later in the week. The All-Pro cornerback cannot be cleared to resume normal activities or play until he has a normal neurological examination (compared with his baseline score) and is cleared by both the team physician and an independent neurological consultant.

Revis, who recorded the first of three Jets interceptions during Sunday's rout of the Bills, took an inadvertent kick to the head from teammate Bart Scott in the fourth quarter. Revis was slow to get up, and doctors attended to him on the sideline. After the game, multiple outlets, including Newsday, reported the cornerback was fine, per sourced information.

The Jets did not give a postgame medical update, and following league protocol, Revis was not made available to the media after the game. Ryan told reporters that he heard the news of Revis' condition Monday morning.

Teammate Aaron Maybin, who said he saw Revis at the practice facility, offered an encouraging sign.

"Yeah, I've seen and talked to him, but not specifically about if he's playing or not," Maybin said in the locker room. "He looks good, he looks like himself."

If Revis, who grew up near Pittsburgh, were forced to sit out Sunday's game, it would mark only the third game of his seven-year career in which he didn't play. He missed two games in 2010 (Weeks 3 and 4) because of a hamstring injury following his well-publicized holdout.

Besides making an interception Sunday, Revis limited Stevie Johnson to four catches for 55 yards.

A Jets spokesman said Monday that until Revis is able to resume normal activities (i.e., running, lifting) he will not be made available to media.
