Jets won't re-sign quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh

The same day the Jets' coaching staff returned from its week-long break from the facility, Matt Cavanaugh essentially was given his walking papers.

The quarterbacks coach, whose contract is set to expire, was informed Monday that he will not be re-signed in 2013.

Uncertainty also hovers over defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, who received permission to interview with the Bills, a source confirmed to Newsday. Like Cavanaugh, Pettine's contract is set to expire shortly, and Pettine could try to break free of Rex Ryan's coaching shadow.

As of now, offensive coordinator Tony Sparano still is employed by the Jets. But the question remains: for how long?

The media will descend upon Florham Park Tuesday in search of answers to these questions and many more.

After the Jets abruptly postponed their end-of-season news conference Dec. 31 -- and waited two days before announcing the makeup date -- there undoubtedly will be a large crowd anxious to hear Woody Johnson finally speak.

The owner hasn't addressed the media since he declared "I didn't sign up for a 3-6 season" back in Week 11. His Jets subsequently plummeted to a 6-10 finish.

Perhaps more troubling is the fact that starting quarterback Mark Sanchez has regressed dramatically (committing an NFL-leading 52 turnovers in the past two seasons) and that the Jets' much-hyped Tim Tebow experiment fizzled beyond belief.

In the wake of a 28-9 loss to the Bills in the season finale, Ryan retreated to the Bahamas for some R&R. But as we've come to learn during his four-year tenure, controversy has a way of finding the larger-than-life coach. While sunning himself, Ryan was photographed sporting a tattoo of his wife in nothing more than a Sanchez jersey.

But far more important than Ryan's taste in body art is the state of his wayward team.

Questions abound for this once-promising franchise that in the 2009 and 2010 seasons found itself a win away from the Super Bowl. Eight days after firing general manager Mike Tannenbaum, Johnson is expected to share his vision for the future with his fan base.

The biggest question is who will be named Tannenbaum's successor. Contrary to what Jets fans may expect, the new general manager -- whoever he may be -- isn't expected to be seated alongside Johnson and Ryan Tuesday.

There was speculation that Tom Gamble already had been offered a deal, but a source said the process still is ongoing. Although the 49ers' director of player personnel remains a top candidate for the job, the Jets reportedly are eyeing other options.

They interviewed their assistant general manager, Scott Cohen, and Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross Monday. Gamble is expected to interview with the Chargers Tuesday, but he twice postponed his interviews with San Diego because of family reasons. He also canceled his second interview with the Jaguars last week.

Dave Caldwell also has been rumored to be high on the Jets' list. The Falcons' director of player personnel met Friday with the Jets, but he's also been linked to the Jaguars' vacant GM job.

Packers director of football operations John Dorsey still is in the mix, but there's speculation he'll be named the Chiefs' GM.
