New Jet Daniel Muir hopes to face former Colts teammates

It seems the injury turnstile brings a new face to the Jets’ locker room every week. On Wednesday, it was veteran defensive tackle Daniel Muir who walked in off the street with the hope of helping the Jets on Sunday against the Colts, a team for which Muir played from 2008-11, making 26 starts along the way.

Jets defensive tackle Sione Po’uha (pictured) sat out yesterday’s practice with a lower back problem, and rookie Kenrick Ellis revealed his sprained knee is expected to keep him out from four to six weeks. Hence the call to the 6-2, 322-pound Muir, who was welcomed to the fold by linebacker Bart Scott, of course, before his first Jets practice.

Muir signed with the Packers in the offseason but was cut in training camp. He’s been lifting weight and running but said it will take him at least this week to get in football shape. “I plan to do everything I can do, which is to get ready,” Muir said. “Right now, that means learn the terminology and my plays. Practice for two or three days. If they call my number, I’ve got to be ready

“The best thing you can do coming in like this is to really learn your game plan. You can’t pick up the whole tool box and figure out everything in there. You’ve got to take what they’re using this week. Learn those, and that will help you. It’s almost better.”

Last November, the Colts released Muir in the afternoon on the same day he visited a veteran’s hospital in the morning. Very cold-blooded. At first, Muir said, it was sweet to get a chance to make a comeback against his former team, but he later added the the administrators responsible for doing that to him are gone and the the game would be like any other.

At the same time, he might hear from some old buddies on the Colts’ D-line this week. “I’m pretty sure I’ll get some calls,” Muir said. “I didn’t want to tell anybody. I just wanted to pop up. Catch them while they’re out there warming up. I’ll probably get a call from everybody on the defensive line, the guys that are still there will mess with me a little bit.”

Told that Colts Pro Bowl defensive end Robert Mathis will miss the game with a knee injury, Muir said that news should help the Jets’ chances. “Rob is a real quiet guy, but Rob is one of the best defensive players in this league by far,” Muir said. “Rob Mathis does everything for you on the football field. They are absolutely going to miss him. I hope he gets back healthy.”
