Pettine a bit edgy about his defense

Mike Pettine is hoping he'll see a little more uniformity with his defensive unit soon.

The coordinator is fully aware the Jets are only nine days into training camp, and they're missing their All-Pro cornerback because he's holding out for a new contract.

But Pettine has a few concerns at the moment.

"I've seen flashes of being great, but I see us having some consistency issues, some young guys that we need to step up," Pettine said Tuesday.

"We have some question marks depthwise in the defensive line, we have some question marks depthwise with the linebacker core, and there are new pieces in the secondary with Kyle [Wilson], Antonio [Cromartie] and Brodney [Pool].

"There's a lot of growing pains there, and some of the plays we've given up have been typical things that those guys have to go through to learn in training camp. That's why we do camp."
