Rex Ryan surprised about size of his league fine

Rex Ryan had to do a double-take when he opened the envelope containing his letter from the league office.

"I was stunned by it, to say the least," the Jets coach said Monday, referring to the $100,000 fine he incurred for shouting an expletive as he walked off the field following the Jets' 20-13 victory over the Steelers on Nov. 9.

Ryan -- a three-time offender, according to the NFL -- wouldn't say if he was yelling at an official or an opposing player, but when asked if he held on to the letter, he joked that he "burned that bad boy." And he reiterated his frustration over how the game was officiated.

"I mentioned before that I never thought our quarterback was as protected as I would have liked to have seen," said Ryan, who was fined $50,000 by the Jets in 2010 for flipping his middle finger at a heckling fan at an MMA event in Florida and $75,000 in 2011 for shouting a profanity at a fan at Gillette Stadium. "I really rather not get into who I was talking to. But again, I apologize if I offended somebody. It wasn't my intention. It was meant to be a private conversation."

What was his wife's reaction to his hefty fine? "She wasn't real happy," he said.

Quarterback, Michael Vick was fined $8,268 for a taunting penalty during the game. Vick said he may decide to appeal it, but he isn't sure yet.

"I don't think that I did anything out of the ordinary, but somebody saw that it was a violation, so it is what it is," he said. "I won't do it next time. I have to understand that I have to keep my composure."

Muhammad Wilkerson and Jace Amaro did not practice because of illness . . . Darrin Walls (calf) participated in individual and positional drills, though Ryan said it's too early to tell if the cornerback, who hasn't played since Oct. 26, will play against the Bills on Sunday.
