CLEVELAND -- Browns president Mike Holmgren says cornerback Joe Haden has appealed a suspension by the NFL and is awaiting a decision from the league.

Holmgren said in a radio interview Tuesday on 92.3 The Fan that Haden has had an appeal hearing. Holmgren's comments were the first confirming Haden is facing a possible suspension for failing a drug test.

Haden is waiting to see if he can play in Sunday's season opener against Philadelphia. On Monday, Haden would not comment on his status and said "I have no idea" when asked if he'll play this week. The Browns are already missing three defensive starters and can't afford to be without Haden, their best coverage defender.

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email that the league "has nothing to report at this point."
