Bubba Watson recalls fond moments with Mets

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Mondays can be really good for Bubba Watson. On his scale, this past Monday was the best because the adoption of his son Caleb was completed. There also was that Monday in April, when he got to wear the Masters green jacket every place for the first time.

And there was a Monday in June when he threw the ceremonial first pitch at Citi Field.

"It was an honor. It was neat to go down and talk to some of the guys. They wanted to talk about golf more than anything. I wanted to talk about baseball," the Masters champion said. "They were playing the Orioles. Buck Showalter is from Pensacola, and I played golf with Buck a lot when I was in high school, so I got to go over to that side and meet all those guys too."

Still, it was the Mets on whom he made the greatest impression, and vice versa. He said: "[Johan] Santana had just thrown his no-hitter, so I talked to him about that. We poked fun at each other. He was making fun of me, I was on his fantasy team and I missed the cut at the U.S. Open. I said, 'Well I dropped you on my fantasy team because you weren't pitching that good, so your no-hitter didn't help me.'

"It's always fun to go and meet some of the guys who are at the top of their sport."

LI's Dobyns has his 'wow'

The lineup of afternoon news conferences at the PGA Championship Tuesday featured Tiger Woods, fellow major champions Keegan Bradley, Watson and Dave Stockton, and then, PGA Professional National champion Matt Dobyns, the head pro at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success.

Dobyns credited his mentor, and fellow PGA participant, Darrell Kestner of Deepdale: "He has meant more to me than anyone in this business." Asked to identify his greatest "wow" moment of the week, Dobyns said: "When I got the [courtesy] Mercedes. It's hard to figure out how to turn that thing on for a guy who doesn't drive a Mercedes."
