If you're hoping to attend the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next year, be prepared to pay steep prices.

A ticket for the three days of play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 26-28) will cost $750 per day, according to the Ryder Cup website. The ticket includes access to the grounds, seating areas and all the food and non-alcoholic beverages you can eat and drink. It does not include parking. You have to register by Tuesday, Oct. 22, for the opportunity to purchase the tickets, and if selected, you will be able to buy tickets when they go on sale in November. Registration is free and winners will be notified on Nov. 4.

Bryan Karns, the championship director of the Ryder Cup, explained the high prices, saying the are  in line with other New York events when you consider that's it's an all-day affair and fans will be able to have breakfast, lunch and dinner included in the cost.

“We want to be very transparent. That is the checkout price,” Karns said. “When you take away New York State tax and the ticket service fees, you get to $660, and then you sort of unpack that and think about the food-inclusive program for an all-day event. It’s in line with the market price for other New York sporting events and this is one of the biggest events in sports.”

All-inclusive tickets to attend practice on Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 23-24) are $255. Tickets for Thursday's final practice on Sept. 25, which includes the opening ceremony, celebrity matches and a junior Ryder Cup exhibition, are $424.

Long Islanders interviewed by Newsday said those prices are out of range for them.

“I refuse to pay that amount of money,” said Gary Cohan, 62, of Bethpage. “It’s not worth it to me.”

“I live 10 minutes away, but I have no interest in going for that price, especially when I can go to the U.S. Open for tennis and see the players practice for free,” said Harriet Strum, 66, of Woodbury. “For the local player, it’s not something we’re willing to pay. This is a people’s park.”

Juniors aged 15 and under will be able to attend the practice days for free with a ticketed adult, which Karns says opens an opportunity for more fans to attend the event.

“We tried to balance it out," Karns said. "We wanted to try to have earlier parts of the week that are still accessible. We try to still deliver on that because we do want it to be something everyone can be a part of and it’s in line with our mission to grow the game. The revenue from the tickets will also go directly to our PGA members who work to grow the game around the country.”

Prices are high especially compared with last year’s event in Rome, where general admission tickets were between $52 and $64 for the practice days, $265 for Friday and Saturday tickets and $275 for Sunday. Karns said that those prices were not taken into consideration, but rather the cost to build the necessary infrastructure at Bethpage and New York market prices.
