Southward Ho continues to honor Havemeyer with tourney
Even though they repaid their benefactor decades ago, the members of Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore still believe they owe a debt to Horace Havemeyer.
He was the member who, 65 years ago, paid $82,500 cash to satisfy the mortgage and absorbed all the closing costs. Current members are sure that, had he not done that, the property would have been bought by a post-war developer and the course wouldn't be around today.
The club did set up a fund that repaid Havemeyer, year by year. It also satisfied his other demand, that the A.W. Tillinghast course be retained. Even before he was repaid in 1954, the club decided to honor him with an amateur tournament in his name. It was designed as "a lasting tribute," and it has held its part of the bargain.
Today, the 60th Havemeyer Invitational Tournament will begin with stroke play qualifying. Match play will continue tomorrow and Saturday. Most of the premier Long Island amateurs will be in the field, including former champion Jonny Doppelt. But the biggest name still is the one on the tournament title.
