STEVEN MATZ
Ward Melville, senior pitcher/first baseman
Player of the Year
Matz, who was drafted in the second round No. 72 overall by the Mets, won the Carl Yastrzemski Award, presented annually to the outstanding baseball player in Suffolk County. Matz helped lead Ward Melville to its first league title in 35 years. The 6-3, 192-pound lefthander went 6-1, allowed two earned runs and 14 hits in 54 innings and struck out 74. He batted .408 and signed to play at Coastal Carolina.
KEVIN CHENICEK
Division, senior pitcher/infielder
Chenicek, the Diamond Award winner as the top pitcher in Nassau County, went 9-0 with a 1.24 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 62 innings in Conference A-I. He beat Clarke, Island Trees, Wantagh, Garden City and Bethpage, all playoff qualifiers. He will play at C.W. Post.
KEVIN COURTNEY
St. John the Baptist, junior pitcher/first baseman
Courtney went 6-1 with a 1.14 ERA and struck out 48 in 49 innings. He hit .515 with 19 runs, four home runs, 21 RBIs and six stolen bases. He had a .794 slugging percentage and a .616 on-base percentage.
C.J. FERRAGGI
Kellenberg, senior pitcher/shortstop
Ferriggi went 4-2 with a 1.71 ERA, 63 strikeouts and 25 hits in 49 innings. He hit .306 with two home runs, 10 runs, 11 RBIs, stole four bases and had a .398 on-base percentage. He will play at Hofstra.
KYLE HANSEN
St. Dominic, senior pitcher
The St. John's-bound Hansen was drafted in the 40th round by the Brewers. He helped lead St. Dominic to its first NSCHSAA championship as he got the save in the deciding game. He went 8-3 with a 1.21 ERA and allowed 29 hits, 13 walks and struck out 107 in 69 1/3 innings.
JOHN KRAUSE
MacArthur, senior pitcher
The right-hander went 9-0 with a 2.57 ERA, 57 strikeouts and 37 hits in 48 innings. He batted .306 with two home runs, 11 RBIs, a .469 on-base percentage and slugged .862. He plans to play at Hofstra.
CAM MARON
Hicksville, senior catcher
Maron, a left-handed batter, hit .462 with 24 hits, 21 walks, 18 RBIs and a .644 on-base. He caught 122 innings in 21 games and threw out 13 of 25 base stealers. Maron is accepted to C.W. Post and was also drafted by the Mets in the 34th round, No. 1,034 overall.
MIKE MASSA
Glenn, senior pitcher/right fielder
Massa went 8-0 with a 1.44 ERA and struck out 70 in 50 innings. He hit .475 with 12 doubles, three home runs and 28 RBIs. He will play at Lafayette.
KYLE OLSEN
North Babylon, senior pitcher/center fielder
Olsen helped lead North Babylon to its first Suffolk Class AA county championship and was the county playoff MVP. He hit .441 with 31 runs, 10 home runs, 36 RBIs and had a .509 on-base percentage. He will play at Briarcliffe.
MATT REISTETTER
Hauppauge, senior catcher
Reistetter set a new Hauppauge single-season hits record with 48 and hit .577. He slugged .807 with 25 RBIs and had a .633 on-base percentage. He threw out 14 of 20 base stealers and had 22 assists, 18 on pickoffs.
BRETT ROESKE
Cold Spring Harbor, senior center fielder
Roeske, Nassau County's all-time hits leader, finished his career with 163 career hits and a .500 average. He batted .551 (49-for-89) this year with 15 walks, 37 stolen bases, 16 RBIs and 52 runs scored. He will play at Binghamton.
JOHN SCHILT
Clarke, senior pitcher/third baseman
Schilt helped lead Clarke to a second place finish in the state, and got wins against defending state champion Maine-Endwell and defending Long Island champion Islip. The right-hander went 10-1 with a 1.34 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 73 innings. He batted .343 with 21 RBIs and is attending St. John's in the fall.
MARCUS STROMAN
Patchogue-Medford, senior pitcher/shortstop
Stroman won the Paul Gibson Award, which is given to Suffolk's top pitcher. The Duke-bound Stroman went 7-2 with a 0.25 ERA and 0.64 WHIP. In 56 2/3 innings, he allowed 24 hits, walked 12 and struck out 106. He had four shutouts and was drafted in the 18th round by Washington. He hit .308 with 24 runs, five home runs, 11 RBIs and stole 18 bases.
BRYAN VERBITSKY
Island Trees, junior center fielder/pitcher
Verbitsky, the Diamond Award winner as the top position player in Nassau County, batted .467 with eight home runs, 37 RBIs and 35 runs in the competitive Conference A-I. He's a five-tool centerfielder and was Island Trees' top pitcher. He went 8-1 with a 1.44 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 63 innings. He has drawn interest from several Division I schools.
TOM ABRUSCATO
Clarke
Nassau Coach of the Year
Abruscato led the Rams to a second-place finish in the state and their third state title-game appearance in eight seasons. Clarke went 25-4-1 and won its first Class A Long Island championship since 2005. The Rams have won 20-plus games in each of Abruscato's 11 seasons as head coach.
JIM MANGO
North Babylon
Suffolk Coach of the Year
Mango helped guide the Bulldogs to its first county championship as the ninth seed. The Bulldogs went 19-8. They won 15 of their final 17 games and went 5-0 in the Class AA double-elimination playoffs.
