Half Hollow Hills won the boys and girls Suffolk County badminton championships for the second year in a row Tuesday night, sweeping every category. "This is a very impressive victory," first-year coach Bill Davey said. "I spent the last two days pacing around the gym thinking to myself, 'how can badminton be this exciting?' but sure enough, it got me going."
Divya Rao and Monica Chen won girls doubles when they defeated Jamie Greco and Taryn DiRocco in the final match, 15-11, 15-12.
Carly Cordano, who won the championship in doubles last year, defeated Smithtown West's Kat DeLanty, 12-13, 11-9, 11-4, for Cordano's first championship singles title.
Doubles partners John Stanis and Jason Scheingold, county runners-up last year, came out on top Tuesday when they defeated Miller Place's Carson Hammer and Liam Warren in the final match, 15-13, 15-7.
Alfred Shim won, 15-2, 15-10, against Smithtown East's Mike Mowad, for the boys' singles title.
"It was rewarding to see the season's hard work and dedication finally pay off," Davey said.
With so many seniors graduating, Davey will have to rely on newcomers to fill big shoes come next year.
And do the Thundercolts have a chance of making it three in a row next year?
Said Davey: "We'll see."
