76°Good Morning

The runs were piling up for Bridgehampton/Ross in the third inning at Cantine Field. When the Killer Bees were done, they had pushed across half a dozen in the rally — the first six in the state Class C Southeast Regional semifinal against Burke Catholic.

But then Bridgehampton/Ross stopped scoring and the Eagles started scoring.

And they didn’t stop until they owned a walk-off, 7-6 win in eight innings Thursday in Saugerties.

“Section IX’s got really good baseball,” Bridgehampton/Ross coach Lou Liberatore said. “We knew that they weren’t going to go away. They’re a championship-caliber team . . . We didn’t fall asleep at the wheel. They worked their way back into the game. Unfortunately, we couldn’t push across another run and create some distance.”

The Killer Bees were in the Ds last year. They fell in their Class D Regional final. This time, it ended for them when Jordan Drucker lined an RBI single to left-center off Tate Foard (3-1) with one out in the eighth in the Regional semifinal.

Burke Catholic, the state Class C runner-up to Chatham in 2024, had reached starter Kai Alversa for two in the third, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to tie it at 6.

Bridgehampton/Ross had built its 6-0 lead like this: Shawn Jayne RBI bunt single; Ari Kardaras RBI single; Tyler Fitzgerald RBI groundout; run-scoring error; Finn Alversa (Kai’s brother) an RBI infield single; and Kai an RBI single.

But Tim Brogan came on in relief and yielded just five hits and fanned eight in the final 5 2/3 to earn the victory.

“I’m just really proud of our guys,” Liberatore said. “These guys have put in work all year to get to this point.”

They finished at 11-7. Six seniors will now depart, including three starters.

“We’ve got a good group coming back,” Liberatore said. “We’ll use this as a learning experience.”
